Choosing Your Class A Motor Home

If you're serious about living life in an RV, Class A motor homes are the way to go – and we supply many choices in our 2026 RV inventory. Should you opt for a Class A gas RV or a Class A RV diesel? What type of floor plan would you prefer, and what amenities do you need? Consider the following to find your perfect Class A motor home for sale near Greenville, NC.

  • Size: A smaller model is easier to drive and park, while a larger option offers more comfortable living, kitchen, and bath spaces.
  • Sleeping Capacity: Expect to sleep three to five people in a small Class A RV and potentially more than 10 in a very large model.
  • Gross Weight: A Class A diesel RV will likely weigh more than a gas-powered model. Factor in all your supplies and how they will impact your RV's GVWR and other measurements before making a purchase.
  • Engine Placement: A traditional Class A motor home has a front-mounted motor, but a diesel pusher with a rear-mounted powertrain is often chosen by full-time RVers looking for premium luxury and comfort.
  • Travel Length: If you plan to take multiweek trips, a Class A RV with washer, dryer, and full-size shower setups could be your ticket to fun and freedom.
  • Weight Class: Our Class A motor home dealer carries RVs in multiple weight classes, some of which might require a CDL, so don't forget to add licensing rules to your checklist.

There is no "best" Class A RV, but we can help you find your best fit in our inventory of new and used recreational vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Class A motor home?

A Class A motor home is the largest kind of recreational vehicle available on today's market. A Class A RV typically comes with a sleeping capacity for as few as three or as many as 10 passengers. Sometimes called a "luxury bus," a Class A motor home is ideal for families or friend groups that want to spend weeks or months on the road with the comforts of home.

What is the smallest Class A RV motor home?

The smallest Class A motor home tends to be made by Thor Motor Coach. New Thor Axis models have a GVWR of up to 14,500 pounds and therefore do not require a CDL, or commercial driver's license, to operate.1 These RVs have a sleeping capacity of three, four, or five people and come with interior features like theater seating or a full sofa.

How tall are Class A motor homes?

Class A motor home dimensions vary by brand, model, and floor plan, but most Class A RVs are between 11 and 14 feet tall and measure 26 to 45 feet long and up to 8.5 feet wide. You'll want to take into account additional inches for roof-mounted air conditioning units or satellite dishes, as well as note your RV's height to make sure you can clear overpasses.

How do you drive a Class A motor home?

Yes, our RV experts can provide guidance on how to drive a Class A motor home, and multiple online sources have great advice as well. Key instructions include taking wide turns, increasing your following distance, and knowing your RV's height and weight for bridge clearances. Practicing in empty parking lots can help you learn to maneuver your Class A motor home more skillfully.

How much does a Class A RV weigh?

A Class A motor home can weigh 10,000 to 30,000 pounds or more. For example, some Thor Axis configurations weigh around 10,500 pounds. Some Newmar Class A RV options, such as the Bay Star Sport, have an unloaded weight of around 17,650 pounds, while a Newmar Class A RV like the King Aire can have a dry weight as high as 49,950 pounds.

Do you need a special license to drive a Class A RV?

In North Carolina, you must have a valid special license to drive any combination of Class A vehicles with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds.1 However, not all Class A RVs reach this weight limit and can be driven with a standard U.S. driver's license. For more details about a motor home's GVWR and your state's licensing requirements, talk with our dealership team.

Do motor homes have showers?

Nearly all Class A and Class C motor homes have showers; some are "wet," which means the shower is combined with the toilet area, and some are "dry," meaning the shower has its own stall. While the vast majority of Class B motor homes are equipped with, at minimum, a wet bath, some smaller or older Class B RVs may omit showers from their designs to maximize living space.

Over the years we have purchased 2 different motorhomes from Riverside. One used and the other new. The experience was great. No high pressure sales and our salesman Tim Mercer was very nice, especially helpful and knowledgeable. He actually made the experience a pleasure. We have used their service department on two occasions and were very pleased with the repairs.

I purchased a Thor Compass in August 2023. It was a pleasant experience. Mrs Banks called us with updates on the campers arrival. The office staff is helpful and professional as well. We’ve brought the coach in for service and the service department is friendly and efficient.

Fantastic customer service! Service manager Tom and his entire staff performed over and above my expectations. While trouble shooting an unscheduled LP gas leak on my class A motor home, they immediately began inspecting and testing. They even drove me to near by suppliers when they did not have the needed part. Highly recommended.
