What Is an East to West Ahara Fifth Wheel Camper?

Ahara is the luxury fifth wheel line of East to West. The brand's philosophy is to have limited floor plans, one main decor aesthetic, and lots of standard features. This means that buyers get a well-appointed RV without an overwhelming amount of options. The name "Ahara" comes from Sanskrit and is a term used in yoga philosophy to refer to the vehicle of consciousness and serves as one of the basic principles upon which health, happiness, and harmony rest.

Construction consists of Azdel-laminated sidewalls and slide roofs, high-gloss fiberglass, MORryde entry steps, and hydraulic auto-leveling systems. Cold-weather options include heated and enclosed underbellies, tank-heating pads, high-capacity furnaces, triple AC availability, and available four-season insulation.

The East to West Ahara is a larger RV. When comparing a fifth wheel vs. travel trailer, a fifth wheel can be much larger because it hitches in the bed of the truck for a more stable and supported ride.

Towing and Truck Match for Ahara Fifth Wheels

When selecting a truck that can safely haul your fifth wheel, there are a few important numbers to look for. The two most important numbers are the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and the Hitch Weight (or Pin Weight).

GVWR is how much your fifth wheel will weigh when it is fully loaded with gear, cargo, and water. You can calculate this number by adding the UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight/Dry Weight) to the CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity).

Hitch Weight or Pin Weight is how much weight is exerted on the trailer hitch on your truck. In the case of a fifth wheel, this number directly correlates to your payload capacity, since the fifth wheel pin rests in the truck bed.

The fifth-wheel towing capacity of your truck should, at a minimum, be able to handle the GVWR of your camper. Additionally, the payload capacity should be able to handle the Hitch/Pin Weight of your camper. Here's a quick reference chart for every floor plan in the Ahara lineup:

Alt Tag

Floor Plan Minimum Towing Capacity Minimum Payload Capacity
297MK 15,810 lbs 2,310 lbs
325RL 15,500 lbs 2,185 lbs
365RL 16,315 lbs 2,315 lbs
387BH-OK 18,775 lbs 2,775 lbs
380FL 19,220 lbs 3,220 lbs
383UR 16,670 lbs 2,670 lbs
385DS 18,820 lbs 2,820 lbs
390DS 19,115 lbs 3,115 lbs
395FB 18,810 lbs 2,810 lbs

When comparing the Pin Weight against the payload capacity of your truck, it's important to remember that the payload capacity also includes the weight of passengers and cargo in the truck itself. It's best practice to leave some wiggle room in your maximum payload capacity to account for the weight of passengers and other gear in your truck. Here are examples using the Pin Weights of each Ahara camper. This chart does not feature official requirements; these are suggestions to avoid maxing out your payload rating.

Floor Plan Pin Weight Payload Requirement
297MK 2,310 lbs 2,500 - 3,000 lbs
325RL 2,185 lbs 2,500 - 3,000 lbs
365RL 2,315 lbs 2,500 - 3,000 lbs
387BH-OK 2,775 lbs 3,000 - 3,500 lbs

383UR 2,670 lbs 3,000 - 4,000 lbs
385DS 2,820 lbs 3,000 - 3,500 lbs

Frequently Asked Questions

What truck do I need to tow an Ahara?

To safely tow an East to West Ahara fifth wheel, you'll need a heavy-duty truck. Depending on the floor plan, minimum towing capacity requirements range from about 15,500 pounds to over 19,000 pounds, with pin weights from 2,100 to 3,200 pounds. That means you'll need a truck rated for these numbers, ensuring both the towing and payload capacity can safely handle it.

Do I need a slider hitch with a short bed?

Yes, if you're towing with a short-bed truck, a sliding fifth wheel hitch is recommended. The slider allows extra clearance between the truck cab and the trailer when making tight turns, preventing damage to your truck and camper. Some Ahara models have tapered front caps, but a slider is still needed for full turning abilities when towing with a short bed.

Can I full-time in an Ahara?

Yes, you can full-time in an Ahara. In fact, the Ahara lineup offers some of the best fifth wheels for full-time living. With residential-style floor plans, four-season protections, tons of storage, and large holding tanks, these campers are truly like a "home away from home." Visit us to tour them in person; we think you'll love what you find!

What are common Ahara floor plans?

Many of the Ahara floor plans are popular with different people thanks to their layouts and amenities. The 385DS is popular thanks to the two bedrooms and loft, while the 395FB residential kitchen fifth wheel is popular due to the large front bathroom, walk-in closet, and laundry room. Front-living enthusiasts love the space and residential feeling of the layout.
